Why Are Mattresses So Expensive?

A good mattress is essential for a good night’s sleep. But with the cost of mattresses climbing, people are looking for cheap mattresses and compromising its quality. Mattresses are now very expensive for the following reasons.

High markup

Mattresses have very high markups. Generally, the markup is 6 to 15 times the cost of manufacturing the mattress. Also, the mattress market is dominated by a limited number of players. So, consumers are bound to pay the price. Most mattresses are sold through retailers. They take a huge commission. As a result, the final price that the consumer pays for the mattress is really high.

Adding unnecessary features

Not all features are suitable for everybody. Some mattress companies offer special features that the consumers often don’t understand. Yet they buy the mattress. The special features increase the price of the mattress.

Lifespan

The mattress lifespan is an important factor to consider when buying a mattress. Usually, a mattress lasts for 8 years. In order for the mattress to last for a long time, the manufacturers use high-quality materials. So, the higher the quality of the mattress, the more expensive it will be.

Not negotiating

Not many people negotiate the price of the mattress. So, they end up paying what the salesman asks for. That’s why they end up paying a higher price for the mattress.

When buying a mattress, you should decide which features you are looking for in a mattress. You should compare the price of the mattress in various shops before buying the mattress. That way, you may be paying a lot less for the mattress.

Not repairing things at home

Sometimes, the water from our bathroom taps keep dripping and we don’t bother to fix it. Your water bill increases. The window seal gets broken and so heat leaks from the house. As a result, your electricity bill rises every month. This wastage can be stopped by doing the repairs quickly.

Wasting food

When we go to a grocery store, we tend to buy lots of things. Many of the items we buy, especially vegetables and fruits have a limited shelf life. As we are very busy, we often forget what’s in our refrigerator. As a result, the food goes bad and we waste money.

Buying what is not needed

We often buy things that we actually don’t need. For example, if you have only 2 members in your family, then it’s a waste of money to buy an SUV. Instead, you can buy an energy efficient car.

Becoming impatient when shopping

There are local markets where you can get similar things like those in the supermarkets but at a less price. You can also negotiate the price in these local markets. But as we are in hurry we buy from expensive stores without comparing the prices of the items. We can also wait for ‘sale’ season to buy things.

Money is very precious. We shouldn’t waste money. These are the ways we waste money unknowingly and we must give up this habit to lead a financially sound life.
